WHY DOES YOUR CAR AC NEED AIR CONDITIONING?

WHY DOES YOUR CAR AC NEED AIR CONDITIONING?

Few things are more aggravating on a hot, sunny day than being stuck in a car with a broken cooling system. If your car’s cooling system only blows warm air on hot days, it’s most likely because it’s low on refrigerant, with a leak somewhere in the system being the most likely culprit.

Let’s look at why automobile air conditioners blow warm air and why car cooling systems might need to be recharged.

RECHARGING YOUR CAR AC IS NOT NECESSARY

Many car owners believe they must recharge or “top off” their air conditioning system with refrigerant on a frequent or annual basis, but this is not true. Because an A/C system is a closed system, coolant is not consumed by the car and does not escape if there are no difficulties. There’s no need to “top off” your car’s air conditioning unless it’s broken.

You may find that your defroster isn’t clearing fogged-up windows throughout the winter; this is a clue that you have a leak. To dehumidify the air, most defrosters turn on the air conditioner. Problems with your car’s air conditioning could indicate compressor or condenser issues that need to be repaired by a professional. Auto air conditioners are complicated systems with a lot of things that can go wrong. This is especially true with older automobiles’ air conditioners.

Most current vehicles are intended to shut down once the refrigerant level drops to a specific level, preventing damage to the air-conditioning compressor if there is a leak in a hose or somewhere in the A/C system.

The compressor maintains the flow of refrigerant throughout the system by pressurizing it. When there isn’t enough refrigerant in the system, the compressor can suffer catastrophic damage. Repairing a compressor is, on average, quite costly.

IF YOUR CAR AC NEEDS TO BE RECHARGED

When should the refrigerant be added or replaced? You may be proactive and have it done before problems arise, but you shouldn’t need it more than once every few years at the most. If your air conditioner is losing its effectiveness even after being topped off, you most likely have a leak. On the other hand, if you stay as cool as a cucumber on the warmest days, you might be able to get away with it. The air conditioner has plenty of refrigerants.
